Our article: Thermoprotective adaptations are critical for arthropods feeding on warm-blooded hosts., Current opinion in insect science, 2019 (DOI: 10.3410/f.735116774.793568089), has been recommended in F1000Prime as being of special significance in its field by F1000 Faculty Member Steven L Chown!
"To a select group of arthropods, humans are just another meal. Such simplicity hides great tragedy, and great ingenuity. Tragedy in the form of human vector-borne disease. Ingenuity in the way mosquitoes, kissing bugs and ticks have to deal with the sudden increase in temperature that comes from a blood meal. As ectotherms, they generally operate at body temperatures 10-15°C lower than the blood temperature of their hosts, which can be as high as 40°C – a temperature known to reduce fitness. Benoit and colleagues stylishly review what is known of how these animals cope with one of nature’s most rapid body temperature increases. The paper is an engaging read with elegant figures".
